A week ago, on Ash Wednesday, the forty day period of Lent leading up to Easter began one of the most important seasons in the Christian tradition. Lent lasts until Holy Saturday and originally served the purification of the soul through physical sacrifice. From a spiritual perspective, however, these forty days mean far more than simple self-denial, they can mark the beginning of a deep inner transformation, offering an opportunity for the purification of consciousness, the release of old patterns and the renewal of the soul.

The key to Lent is self restraint. When a person consciously limits physical desires, a profound developmental process begins, the inner energy once used to maintain habits is freed and this energy begins to serve spiritual growth.

But what truly happens on the level of the soul during Lent?

1. Forty days as a complete cycle of rebirth

Since ancient times, the number forty has symbolized transformation and initiation. According to the Bible the Flood lasted forty days and Moses spent the same length of time on Mount Sinai before receiving the Ten Commandments from God. After his baptism, Jesus withdrew into the wilderness for forty days and forty nights, separated from the outer world and fasting completely after which he began his messianic mission.

Tradition holds that this amount of time is necessary for consciousness to release old patterns of functioning so that a new quality can emerge. In spiritual terms, forty days represent a full cycle of purification, during which a person can detach from energies that once hindered growth.

2. Self restraint releases spiritual energy

The most important spiritual key of fasting is self mastery. When we do not immediately give in to every physical or emotional impulse, conscious presence strengthens as instinctive drives are transcended. Our attention gradually turns from the outer world toward our inner being.

As a result, intuition often intensifies, emotions and thoughts become clearer, and we draw closer not only to God but also to our true, authentic self. Rather than seeing growth through sacrifice as suffering, we can recognize it as the condition for the birth of a higher inner strength.

3. Fasting helps release the energetic burden of the seven deadly sins

Spiritually, Lent is connected to recognizing and overcoming the seven deadly sins pride, greed, anger, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth.

The process of self restraint brings these inner impulses into awareness. When a person says no to excess the patterns that feed dependency, chronic dissatisfaction or restlessness born from craving gradually weaken.

Thus, fasting is not self-punishment but the opposite: a true gift to oneself, through which the soul is liberated and regains its original purity and balance.

4. The fasting period accelerates karmic purification

During times of restraint and inward focus, long forgotten emotions, memories and unresolved inner processes often surface. Many people experience profound realizations about themselves during this period insights that previously remained hidden. As body and soul cleanse, many things gain new meaning. We may begin to see connections and behavioral patterns that weighed on us as karmic burdens, giving us the opportunity to correct them in the future.

5. Lent prepares the soul for rebirth

Easter, which arrives at the end of Lent, symbolizes rebirth and resurrection. After the inner purification of forty days, we learn to notice and appreciate more deeply what has been given to us.

Dissatisfaction and constant pressure to achieve are gradually replaced by inner calm, as self restraint reveals that true stability does not come from external things but from inner balance and awareness.

These forty days offer each of us the chance to release ingrained patterns that have hindered our growth, so that by Easter we may come closer to our renewed self one who moves forward with greater clarity and consciousness on the path ahead.
