Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac.

One of the most common misconceptions in astrology is that Aquarius is a water sign. While the name might cause confusion, once you get to know this zodiac sign, it becomes strikingly clear that Aquarius is an air sign.

The energy of air is all about the mind. Intellectual, curious, and deeply social signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) are passionate about interpersonal dynamics. As the last air sign of the zodiac, Aquarius takes these concepts to a whole new level.

As the eleventh and penultimate sign of the zodiac, Aquarius is actually the final air sign, meaning it deals more with the big picture of air rather than the details. As an air sign, its approach to life is primarily mental, even intellectual. Mental agility is a shared trait of Aquarius and the other air signs, Gemini and Libra: Gemini is able to grasp various thoughts and see things from another person’s perspective. Libra seeks to find the common ground that links different viewpoints, while Aquarius is able to view things from a completely new and unusual perspective.

The depiction of a man pouring water from a jar arose because, in ancient times, the Aquarius period coincided with the season of floods and rains in the Middle East.

Regarding personality, some modern astrologers claim that Mercury is exalted in Aquarius—though traditionally, Mercury’s exaltation sign is Virgo. People born under the sign of Aquarius are influenced by two different planets: Saturn and Uranus. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of innovation, technology, and surprising events. Uranus perfectly reflects Aquarius’s distinct approach, complementing the visionary air signs’ unconventional nature—and while Uranus is responsible for their restlessness, originality, and impulsiveness, Saturn gives them calmness, concentration, and perseverance. These traits rarely appear separately—their character is a balanced mix of these qualities.

The traditional ruler Saturn would give Aquarius a gloomy disposition, but its association with Uranus likely explains Aquarius’s reputation for eccentricity, a futuristic or scientific outlook on life, and innovative thinking.

Planets in Aquarius adopt the qualities typical of this sign, such as originality, love of freedom, and a fondness for experimentation. Of all the zodiac signs, Aquarius is undoubtedly the most innovative, progressive, rebellious, and humanitarian.

These people have an incredible number of ideas and can think things through systematically, but they tend to be far ahead of their time, often encountering misunderstanding and disappointment because what they think of as normal is seen as unusual by others—soon after, they come up with a new, equally original idea, and history repeats itself.

As a fixed sign, Aquarius represents someone who sticks to their ideas, regardless of whether they are popular, conventional, or widely accepted. However, they cannot be considered inflexible—and they don’t insist that things go their way. But as a fixed sign, they can be stubborn—once this sign makes up its mind, there’s no turning back! Aquarius’s hard-headedness can sometimes get them into trouble. When Aquarius commits to a new system or approach, they find it difficult to see a situation from a different perspective. This is often seen as their Achilles’ heel—in medical astrology, Aquarius is associated with the ankles. Aquarius’s stubbornness stems from strong, justified beliefs, and as soon as they have the opportunity to make a change, they find peace.

Thus, they don’t like to change themselves, but they do want to bring about change.

At heart, every Aquarius is a rebel: These air signs don’t get along well with authoritarian figures, not to mention institutions that represent tradition and long-standing conventions. They are free spirits and eccentrics, often recognizable by their unusual fashion sense, unconventional hobbies, and nonconformist attitudes.

Aquarius is the person who gets things moving, removes obstacles, and frees others from anxiety.

But while Aquarians often plan revolutions or proudly display their sense of style, there is also a sensitive side to them that requires appreciation, support, and love. These people have gentle and fragile souls, and they try to avoid conflict. If an Aquarius’s ego is threatened, they are likely to distance themselves from stressful situations. Their greatest desire is to be treated with respect. From the outside, Aquarians may not seem very emotional, as they are more interested in the exchange of ideas and helping others.

Combining the futuristic, iconoclastic nature of Uranus with the mental qualities of the air signs, individuals with a strong emphasis on Aquarius in their birth chart are often interested in the greater good of society.

They can envision a more just society without existing hierarchies, where everyone can pursue their interests as long as they don’t infringe on others’ rights: personal freedom and independence are highly valued.

People born under this sign hate restrictions on their freedom and suffer in small spaces without a broad perspective and freedom of movement. They can’t stay in one place for long, and as soon as they arrive at a new location, they immediately start thinking about leaving. However, they never force anyone to share their restlessness.

The water-bearer, who carries a jar of water, freely shares the water with all who are thirsty. Astrologers say this is a good symbol for people born under the sign of Aquarius because they generously share their gifts with others. Aquarians are often humanitarians.

It is important to note that Aquarius is removed from this process—this perspective shows us that Aquarius is positioned as an independent entity, separate from the life-giving hydration it offers to the cracked earth. Both Aquarius and its opposite sign, Leo, have social orientations, but while Leo wants to stand out from the crowd, if not lead it, or receive praise from it—Aquarius wants to stand apart from the crowd. Without a vision of the greater good expressed through a community of people with common goals, Aquarians may be content to simply be eccentrics.

Although their sense of individuality and uniqueness is well-developed, they still need like-minded people who help them pursue and realize their interests and ideas.

In this regard, Aquarius reveals a deep connection with community: motivated by a spirit of equality, these water-bearers enjoy teamwork and participating in a community of like-minded people—rooted in teamwork, collaboration, and the concept of “the greater good,” Aquarius is determined to bring about powerful change in the world.

They possess great imagination and intuition, allowing them to discover hidden connections and “see around the corner”—but they rarely share ugly or unfavorable discoveries with others.

The fire of foresight drives Aquarius to strive to create an orderly system—social, political, or even cosmic—where everyone has value and a role.

This means they are interested in people and care about them collectively. They believe that everyone is their friend, regardless of whether they are black or white, rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. Aquarius is a friendly sign.

At their core, they are humanitarians who care about social issues and strive to find solutions to various injustices. They love nature and try to uncover the secrets of natural laws—they tirelessly work to solve the problems they set their minds to.

Aquarius’s deeply investigative mind is almost exclusively focused on human potential because this sign embodies the power of the human mind to transform nature and the world.

As the zodiac’s humanitarian, this star sign is known for being eccentric, unique, and marching to the beat of their own drum—but also for being cold, distant, and somewhat aloof. Here’s the thing: Aquarius hates small talk. They have little interest in petty gossip, and honestly, they care less about superficial niceties. This star sign is committed to making a big impact from the ground up, which means these revolutionaries are all about macro-level changes. Aquarius aims to move the needle through radical social progress, so if they seem indifferent, it’s probably because the matter at hand isn’t focused on the community.

Aquarians must remember that progress always starts at the micro level and should support empathy and compassion wherever possible.

From the two signs in square with them, Aquarius can learn the value of commitment (Taurus) and depth (Scorpio).

Career

Many Aquarians have excellent minds. They are very smart in the sciences and are particularly interested in anything that can help people.

Perhaps because many renowned scientists and inventors (like Charles Darwin and Thomas A. Edison) had their Sun in Aquarius, Aquarius has become known as the sign of scientists and inventors.

It is no surprise that they are fascinated by gadgets and inventions, and some Aquarians themselves become great inventors.

Others may support political movements focused on issues of freedom and justice.

These people have very strong wills, which they occasionally replace with irresponsible actions because they often set themselves very challenging tasks and consider it beneath their dignity to seek advice.

Love and Relationships

These people are tolerant, kind, and well-meaning, and can be selfless and compassionate friends.

Due to the connection between modern Western astrology houses and signs, Aquarius is associated with the Eleventh House, which is linked to friendship, and through it, groups and organizations. However, being an air sign, Aquarius is not particularly interested in the emotional commitment of “best friend” type close friendships (which is more typical of water signs). Aquarius stereotypically has many acquaintances but few very close friends—all by choice.

While Aquarius can make a relationship work with any zodiac sign, these water-bearers must remember that compromise is extremely important: not everyone will care about the same things, but that’s what makes the world beautiful!

If you’re an Aquarius, your special and unique gift is your tolerance and understanding of other people. You have the gift of being able to sense what people are really thinking and feeling, regardless of how they are dressed or what background they come from, and people feel like you’re their friend because you genuinely care about them. With this gift, you can help people bring out the best in their own lives.

Aquarius admires the fearless autonomy of fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) and the intellectual connection with air sign counterparts (Gemini and Libra). But when it comes to Aquarius compatibility, no sign is completely off-limits. Essentially, Aquarius is drawn to revolutionaries—people who are enthusiastic, passionate, and committed to making the world a better place. Regardless of star sign, Aquarius is attracted to friends and lovers who are not afraid to break the rules… or at least don’t mind that Aquarius is unwaveringly committed to the cause. Since Aquarians always think on a grand scale, partnership is not just about an interpersonal dynamic; it’s actually a political statement between the two of them.

Aquarius needs plenty of space and time to think, form ideas, and plan their role in the revolution. Ultimately, freedom is the most important thing for Aquarians, who see challenges to their independence as power-hungry attempts to control them. To gain an Aquarius’s trust, don’t try to curb their quirks, and don’t try to prevent them from flying their freak flag high. The traditional earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) may find Aquarius’s unpredictable and non-traditional approach unsettling, as they prefer stability and routine. Additionally, the sensitive water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) struggle with Aquarius’s tendency to keep emotions at a distance and seek deeper emotional intimacy than Aquarius usually offers.

Physical and Mental Health

Aquarians are great thinkers, but they must remember to stay grounded in their immediate surroundings. These water-bearers can become so focused on implementing wide-ranging reforms that they neglect their families, friends, and health—earning them a reputation for being distant in relationships.

This can be harmful both physically and mentally.

Aquarius is represented by the water-bearer, the mystical healer who bestows water, or life, upon the earth.

In tarot, Aquarius is depicted by the Star card, which can be imagined as a larger-than-life mythical being with one foot firmly on the ground (symbolizing a sense of being grounded) and the other in the water.

Aquarius holds a vase, pouring out a new flow of inspiration to nurture longevity, healing, and hope.
