One of the most prevailing superstitions in our civilized world is Friday the 13th. The day Friday and the number 13 are separately believed to be unlucky, together double trouble.

Why do we believe that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day?

The roots of this belief perhaps originated in the dark Middle Ages, more precisely on October 13, 1307. This day, a death sentence secretly was pronounced by the pope and the king of France in Rome against the “Knights Templar.” They were declared heretics, tortured, and crucified.

Superstitions from Ancient Times

Superstition regarding Friday has been there since ancient times. The ancient Romans, however, had consecrated the sixth day of the week-that is, Friday-to Venus, the goddess of beauty, and considered that day to be the luckiest day of the week. According to Muslims, Allah created Adam on a Friday and that he and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit on the same day. Christians believe that Christ was crucified by the Romans on a Friday. The number 13 is considered an unlucky number because, as Scandinavian belief postulates, a 13th figure added itself to the 12 demigods in mythology, that of Loki-who symbolized evil.

Biblical References

Numbers 7, 12, and 40 carry symbolic significance in the Bible. Numbers running after these are conventionally treated as an unlucky number. In the Christian faith, the number 13 is said to signify the 13th guest at the Last Supper, Judas, who betrayed Jesus to be crucified.

Numerology

Many people believe that numbers are directly connected with our lives and material things. For numerologists, the number 12 is a complete number: 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods on Olympus, 12 Israeli tribes, Jesus’ 12 apostles, 12 in a dozen, etc. Therefore, the following number 13 can be associated with bad luck and imperfection. Besides, 13 is a prime number, referring to oddness, strangeness, or unexpected events.
