The New Year is approaching, and with it comes the ritual of setting “resolutions” and defining new goals. This year, let us reflect on spiritual growth—these tips can help.
Unfortunately, often in our initial enthusiasm we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. Statistics show that by the end of January or the beginning of February, about 80% of those “resolutions” have vanished. One reason is that instead of encouraging genuine inner change, we focus on practical, action-oriented tasks.
To avoid losing momentum, embrace true self-awareness and focus your attention on themes and areas that break down lifestyle and spiritual growth into monthly steps.
Take a glass vase and an A4 sheet of paper, dividing the paper into 12 equal pieces. On each piece, write down an important area of life or task that you feel needs more attention in the coming year. Fold the papers, place them in the vase, and on the first day of each month, draw one at random.
It is not just what you say, but how you say it. Strive to be honest in expressing your feelings and thoughts, but at the same time consider the other person’s receptiveness and emotional state.
Don’t wait for others to reach out—take steps to maintain important or once-important connections. Be open and welcoming; avoid withdrawing from the world for too long. If you feel lonely, work on forming new relationships and connections.
No matter how crazy life gets, try not to carry burdens that are not truly yours. Simplify life’s routines wherever possible, and schedule time to replenish your resources.
Pay attention to what your body is telling you, and react accordingly. Feed it the best food and take good care of it, remembering that regular exercise is part of the package.
Self-discipline helps in any situation and relationship, adding to self-respect and gaining more respect from others. Do not overextend generosity or help others if it hurts you or your loved ones.
As temporary relievers, these habits never help in growth. You can look upon your failures and deficiencies dispassionately and instead of spiraling downward, work towards solutions.
Be just and avoid double standards—measure situations, actions, and characteristics on the same scale. Give others the respect and consideration you would appreciate.
Expand your knowledge and abilities continuously; read voraciously and never stop learning. Never be “done”—life requires constant growth.
Step out of the cycle of habits and routines and explore something you’ve always been curious about but never had the courage or time to pursue. This could be a new hobby, a form of exercise, a spiritual practice, or any activity you’ve dreamed of trying.
Look deep inside yourself and decide what meaningful life means to you. Do not waste your time over trifles and avoid those relationships or activities that lead to a dent in your meaningful living. Create your value system.
Trust your intuition, depend on some form of belief that works for you; trust that no matter how much you live your life with awareness, the universe could have in store things that completely take you down life’s path.
We are naturally loving, kind, and understanding at the core. For one month, pay special attention to how love-focused you have become and the space around you. Let love lead your actions, and let changes occur in your life.
