The question immediately arises: Do you choose the deck, or does the deck choose you? Well, both scenarios can be true. When selecting a tarot deck, it’s important to always listen to your intuition. You may have read or heard something about a particular deck that intrigued you, but in reality, you might not feel a real connection with it.

I recommend looking at the cards, studying the symbols—do they appeal to you? Do the images speak to you? Do they evoke any thoughts or feelings? Some decks feature stunning artwork, yet when you try to use them, they don’t “speak” to you in the way you’d hoped.

We are all different, and everyone resonates with different things. If you’re the one choosing the deck, take your time browsing, exploring, and allowing your intuition to guide you. Let yourself feel which deck is truly yours.

However, sometimes the deck chooses you. You might feel drawn to a particular deck—even if you’ve never seen it before or don’t find it particularly beautiful. Yet, there’s an inexplicable pull between you and the deck. In that case, don’t overthink it—if you have the chance, buy it. There’s a reason it wants to be with you.

If You Choose the Deck

Get familiar with different decks, study their artwork, and let your intuition guide you. Pay attention to how a deck makes you feel—this is the one that’s meant for you.

If the Deck Chooses You

There’s nothing to do but go with it—just buy it! 😊

Tips for Choosing a Tarot Deck

Today, there are many tarot decks available to choose from. Here are a few tips to help you find the right one:

  • Choose a deck with clear labels and a guidebook
Some tarot decks have minimal or no text on the cards, which can make them harder to use—especially for beginners. If you’re just starting out, a deck with clear card names and a detailed guidebook can help you build confidence and deepen your understanding.

  • Pick a deck that comes with a guidebook
Most decks include a guidebook or booklet, which can be incredibly useful. Sometimes, a single word, phrase, or explanation from the book will resonate with you and deliver a message you need at that moment.

  • Some decks are particularly complex
For beginners, I don’t recommend choosing a difficult-to-interpret deck, as it might discourage you. For example, Egyptian Tarot, Ibis Tarot, and Kazanlár Tarot feature different imagery than traditional decks, which changes their meanings as well.

Of course, if a deck truly speaks to you, it overrides all logic and suggestions. It may be the perfect companion for you, no matter what!
